Tortuguero is home to an extraordinary array of wildlife. Depending on the tour and the season, you have great chances of spotting monkeys, sloths, toucans, crocodiles, various species of colorful frogs, and—if visiting between July and October—the majestic green sea turtles. Our local guides are experts at spotting animals that are often hidden in the canopy.

4. Packing Essentials
Tortuguero’s rainforest environment is unique, and being well-prepared is key to a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Here is our essential guide on what to bring and how to pack for your journey to our remote paradise.
While we do not have strict weight limits for our boat transfers, we generally recommend following standard airline luggage allowances (usually one large bag and one carry-on per person).
If you are traveling with an excessive amount of luggage or particularly heavy items, please be aware that the boat captains may charge an additional fee of $4.00 per extra bag, payable in cash upon boarding. To ensure a comfortable ride for everyone, we recommend packing light and using soft-sided bags whenever possible.
To fully enjoy the rainforest and the lodge, we suggest bringing:
Rain gear: A lightweight, breathable raincoat or poncho.
Protection: High-quality insect repellent and sunscreen.
Footwear: Comfortable walking shoes or light hiking boots (that you don’t mind getting a bit muddy) and sandals for the lodge.
Accessories: A flashlight or headlamp (essential for walking around the lodge at night), a dry bag for your electronics, and a reusable water bottle.
Think breathable and quick-drying. Lightweight, light-colored long sleeves and pants are excellent for protecting you from the sun and insects while keeping you cool. Don’t forget your swimsuit, as it’s the perfect attire for lounging at the lodge or enjoying a dip in the pool after an adventure!
